Oxygen facials: Everything you need to know

It’s a weird premise, but it turns out spraying a highly concentrated stream of oxygen molecules to the skin’s epidermis can make it glow a lot. The oxygen facial, typically done in a salon, helps to nourish skin and promotes collagen growth.

They take up to an hour in a salon and are very costly, but now you can take oxygen facials into your own hands with a selection of at-home devices to get the same results in much less time.

The technique is favored by celebs, most recently Olivia Coleman, for her glow at the Oscars. It's even claimed Victoria Beckham, Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel, and (shocker) Kim Kardashian also all own and travel with their own oxygen machines.

But what exactly is an oxygen facial, and how does it work? Here’s everything you need to know.

Oxygen Facials: Everything You Need To Know

What is an oxygen facial?

An oxygen facial is a non-invasive skincare procedure where a machine delivers a stream of pressurised oxygen across the surface of the skin. The oxygen is directed onto the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin) to help disperse lightweight skincare ingredients.

This oxygen is often combined with ingredients such as the following:

  • Hyaluronic acid

  • Vitamins and antioxidants

  • Botanical extracts

  • Hydrating serums

The oxygen helps distribute these ingredients evenly over the skin’s surface, supporting hydration and leaving the complexion looking smoother and brighter.

Celebrities, including Madonna, swear by this technique for smoother and plumper skin.

What results can you expect from an oxygen facial?

This glowy effect does actually last as long as it says on the tin (up to six days). With no post-treatment downtime, you could do the oxygen facial at home before a big day—wedding, date, or taking a new LinkedIn pic. The glow shall come to you and stay put.

Oxygen facial at home

While oxygen facials are traditionally offered in salons and aesthetic clinics, at-home devices have made it possible to achieve a similar skin-boosting effect without booking an appointment.

These devices replicate aspects of professional methods by helping distribute lightweight serums across the face. Regular use can complement a long-term skincare routine and keep the skin looking hydrated and radiant, especially when combined with skincare habits that support naturally glowing skin.

Alternative skincare tech to oxygen facials

Oxygen facials are just one way to support healthy-looking skin. An alternative that can help you get glowing skin at home is an LED face mask. They use specific wavelengths of red light to support clearer and more even-looking skin.

Used consistently, these tools can complement your routine and help maintain smoother, brighter-looking skin over time.
